So I went to NAIMUN. World Health Organization, Moldova. Overall, I didn’t dislike it I guess. It was different.
I didn’t like it nearly as much as RUMUN. Maybe I’m not personally skilled enough to do well at a larger conference, or maybe it was the fact that we didn’t know about the major laptop advantage, but Moldova was weak the entire time. Almost never got called on to speak (although still more than USA) and then couldn’t really gain support. Part of that is the fact that my partner wasn’t a crazy power-seeker like me and mostly played a lot of hangman, but I honestly don’t think I knew how to control everyone like Horace Mann and Mira Costa. The most power I ever had over a room was RUMUN 2010 since after that came my first ever large conference (NHSMUN) and after that I was RUMUN advanced, which had a whole different dynamic, and after that was NAIMUN.
The advanced committees, especially Chengkai’s, seemed awesome. The topics were crazy fantastic. Plus he apparently had almost unlimited power and could put people in re-education camps. * envy *
For my committee, I think my chair/dais did a pretty good job. Especially considering the type of trouble cindy and jess had to go through, I fared well. The first topic (and the only one we got to) was interesting and relevant to my delegation, and the room was generally under control. The last session was pretty awesome; we mostly just fooled around and then the dais danced to single ladies in togas to reward us for raising $1000. Also, everyone kept hitting on the chair. For superlatives/joke awards, SeokJin and I got “most likely to become the next Kim Jong-il.” Although they might have just been talking about him since he talked to a lot of people. USA got “nicest”.
I found NAIMUN a lot more lax in their scheduling than anywhere I’ve been before. Never more than two sessions a day, with the longest session being 4 hours. There were also a lot of breaks to raise money for charity:water, read candygrams, watch an hourlong movie on out second topic in Spanish with barely visible subtitles, etc. The candygrams were actually pretty amusing (“Roses are red, tomatoes are too, if I had one now, I’d throw it at you” ; “I’m sorry for spitting my gum on you but it’s okay because you locked me in your car” ; Plus the ones Neil and Julie sent to Sweta and Eric pretending to be Eric and Sweta, respectively: “currycurrycurrycurrycurry” and “stop calling me in the morning”) and we always raised a lot of money to read them. This gave us a lot more time for the best part, which is just hanging out in the rooms and doing nothing xP
I did sleep a lot, especially since there was one day when our wake-up call was at 10 or something ridiculous like that. It took Jess and Cindy an hour to wake me up on the first day, and apparently I really suck and being normal while sleeping, so after that I slept on the floor to avoid being creepy. On the bus ride there, I was asleep almost the whole time. I even fell asleep in line at Maryland House. Apparently the teachers were really worried.
The food was great. There was enough variety for me to eat at a different place everyday, and most of the places I would eat again. The food I brought disappeared surprisingly fast, and Jess’s juice went barely two days, but there was milk at the convenience store, so everything was okay. The emergency Pocky lasted until the bus ride home.
The ice cream social at Hilltop Madness was the best thing ever, especially since it was free, and the performances were pretty good, too. Every conference should have one. As for the delegate dance… I can’t even describe it here, I think it warrants its own post. I may never ever go to a dance ever again.
I did get pictures. Lots.
Anything I forgot? No, that seems to be all.
